First Aid & Home Remedies | Sprains

Hi! It's Lily! I'll be talking to you about sprains.

Have you ever gotten a sprain before? They're NOT fun. I've gotten multiple sprains, some worse than others.

When I was 8 years old I sprained my mid-foot pretty bad. I couldn't walk on it, and I was scared to death to visit the doctor.
The doctor said that some sprains can be worse than breaks because if they're bad enough, they take longer to heal and they even hurt more.

After a few weeks, it was healed and I could walk again!

Do you think you might have a sprain? Read the symptoms and see if you can figure it out.

Symptoms (thanks Google):
  • Sprained ankle
A sprained ankle causes swelling, pain, and limited range of motion.
  • Sprained thumb
Thumb weakness, swelling, bruising, and pain are symptoms.
  • Sprained wrist
Wrist swelling, pain, bruising, and tenderness are symptoms.
  • Sprained knee
Symptoms include pain, swelling, bruising, and limited knee mobility.

Treatment:

The treatment is simple. RICE. That's right. RICE. Rest, ice, compression, and elevation really help. What I did was wrap my foot in an ace bandage, applied ice (not directly, but I used ice in a plastic bag against the bandage or wrapped in a towel), and I kept it elevated at home by resting it up on a bar stool. I didn't walk on it, so instead my family went to DI and bought a cheap pair of crutches for me to use.

You'd probably have to do the same for a sprained ankle or knee. No crutches needed for a sprained wrist or thumb! Actually, please don't use crutches for a sprained wrist or thumb- it'll make it worse.

Remember:
REST
ICE
COMPRESSION
ELEVATION After it's Healed:

Yay! It's healed! You'll still have to be careful around the area of the former sprain. The muscles around where you had the sprain might be a little weaker and can make it easier to hurt yourself again.

Welcome!

Hi! Welcome to Lily Esther's Guide for Girls! ABOUT THIS BLOG I read The Great Big Glorious Book for Girls (Rosemary Davidson/ Sarah Vine)  and it inspired me to create this blog! The book is really good, by the way. I would definitely recommend it! This blog will have lots of great tutorials, tips, games, recommendations, and many other fun things for girls to see and do! WHY A BLOG? I decided to create this online guide because first of all, it's easier to read and navigate. Secondly, it's easier for me to make! And lastly, it's cheaper for me to make a free blog online than printing out a lot of books! HOW TO NAVIGATE: There are three simple ways to navigate this blog. You can either type in the search bar what you're looking for, check out the pages at the top, or use the labels (right side). On each page, there will be links to posts falling under that category. If you're not looking for anything in particular, you can scroll through the posts.

Crafts | Homemade Rice Packs

Hi! It's Lily! Today I'll be showing you how to make rice packs. Rice packs can be used for many things. Cold packs are very good if you have a sprain. They help with pain and cut down on swelling. Hot packs are great if you have an ache or sore muscles. If you'd like to make your own, make sure you have the following items: A pair of old socks (make sure they don't have any holes) Rice A sewing machine (or something to stitch up the top with) 2 rubber bands  Scissors (use with sewing machine) Let's get started! First start off by labeling one sock HOT and one sock COLD. You'll be making both of them, but I'm going to use the cold pack as my example. Once you've finished labeling them, decorate! Make them as crazy or simple as you want them to be! I wrote my name on mine.  Next you're going to fold over the top of the sock (above picture) and get your rice ready.  Time to fill them up! Fill up a cup with rice and
